Sheila Word Butler, 79 of Benton, Kentucky passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center in Paducah, Kentucky.

Sheila was born in Paducah, Kentucky on September 12, 1944 to the late Edwin Word and Aileen Hobbs Word. In 1966, she was a graduate of the first nursing class at the Paducah Junior College. Sheila was a charter member and past president of the Jackson Purchase Operating Nurses. She volunteered her time as a clinic nurse at the Jackson House and taught LPN classes in Dyersburg, Tennessee. In 1995, she was elected to the Board of Director for American Board of Occupational Health Nurses. While on board, she served as the treasurer and chairman of Certified Occupational Health Advisory Board. Sheila was listed in the Who’s Who in American Nursing, Medicine & Healthcare and America. She had items written in the Occupational Nursing Exam and Certifications. During her nursing career, she worked in labor and delivery. Sheila retired from Air Products in 2008 after 24 years of being the plant nurse. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling and volunteering at Baptist Health. She was a member of Twin Lakes Worship Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Walton (Alex Gasperini) of Paducah, KY; step-son, Ben Butler (Ladonna) of Paducah, KY; four grandchildren, Reilly, Micah, Madeline and Ben.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin E. Butler; her parents; brother, Dewey B. Word; and granddaughter, Alexis P. Walton.

A funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Collier Funeral Home with Bro. Jeremy Short officiating.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Collier Funeral Home, 211 West 5th, Benton, Kentucky.

Private family entombment will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
