Marshals pick up 69-60 win over Webster County

Matthew Langhi led the Marshals with 18 points in Tuesday’s 69-60 win over Webster County.

Marshall County improved to 18-6 following last night’s win over Webster County after a couple of tough district losses last week. Three players finished in double figures for the Marshals led by Matthew Langhi with 18 points, Alex Staples scored 14 and Tommy Robertson finished with 11.

Seven of the Marshals first nine points were scored by Robertson and they held a slight lead until Webster County tied the game up at 13. The Trojans finished out the first quarter with a 15-14 lead.

A rebound by Langhi and coast to coast basket put the Marshals back on top by one to open the second quarter. Down by two at 18-16, Kyzer Phillips tied the game up then followed it with a three pointer for a 21-20 lead. The Marshals went on to outscore the Trojans 15-5 to finish out the half on a 36-25 lead.

Fourteen of Langhi’s team-leading 18 points lifted the Marshals in the second half, six coming in the third quarter.  Half of their 16 points in the quarter came at the free throw line where they went 8-for-8 and held a 52-42 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Webster County outscored the Marshals by one in the final frame, led by Deshawn Murphy with nine. The Trojan’s cut the lead down to seven at 61-54 but in the final minute and a half, the Marshals converted on eight of their 10 trips to the line to pull out the 69-60 win.

Langhi was 10-of-12 and Staples 6-of-7 at the free throw line. As a team, the Marshals were 23-of-27.

Three more games remain on the regular season schedule starting with McCracken County (21-7) on Friday in Paducah. The Marshals and Mustangs split two games played in December.
