A shooting in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday morning has left “multiple casualties,” authorities said.
The Louisville Metro Police said they are responding to “an active aggressor” on East Main Street in downtown, adding “there are multiple casualties.” FBI Louisville described the incident as a shooting, and other officials urged residents to stay away from the area.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said in a tweet he was headed to the scene of the shooting. “Please pray for all of the families impacted and for the city of Louisville,” he wrote.
Dozens of police crews descended upon downtown Louisville on Monday morning after “multiple” people were shot.
Louisville Metro Police asked the public to avoid downtown Louisville near Preston and Floyd street during a shooting investigation outside the Preston Pointe building on Main Street.
The incident started around 8:30 a.m. at the Old National Bank at 333 E. Main St. According to LMPD’s twitter account, there are multiple casualties after the shooting.
A witness who did not want to be identified said she was driving by that intersection said she heard several gunshots as well as breaking glass.
“I had just dropped my son of at work on River Road,” she said. “I was at the stop light, and the first thing that I saw — there was a guy across the street at the intersection and he was lying down at the entrance to a hotel.”
She said the person appeared to be a man — a civilian — and he was being tended to by someone with a walkie-talkie. She said she at first thought he was a jogger who had fallen until she noticed he was on the steps and not the sidewalk.
Then she heard the gunfire.
“As I was sitting at that intersection, gunfire erupted, like, right over my head,” she said. “I didn’t know if it was going at the bank or out of the bank I took off.
“When I turned, I saw that one of the windows in the bank had been blown out.”
At that point, she said several law enforcement vehicles pulled up.
“They were coming from everywhere,” she said. “The police were coming out of their cars with black rifles.”
“I just ducked in my car and waited there.”
Dozens of LMPD cars and at least three ambulances were seen leaving the scene. LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel was on the scene.
