Lady Marshals finish 2-3 in Spring Break games at the Ripken Experience

Madyson Morton finished the Lady Marshals 5-game trip to Pigeon Forge with fives hits including a triple and three RBIs.

Spring Break games at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. for the Lady Marshals began with two games on April 2. It wasn’t the start they wanted with two losses, 5-4 to Marlington, OH and 5-2 to West Allegheny, PA but they turned things around on April 3 with two nice wins, 6-2 over Copley, OH and 6-1 over General McLane, PA. The fifth and final game was played on Wednesday, April 5 and the Lady Marshals fell 3-1 to Forbush, NC to finish 2-3 in Pigeon Forge.

April 2
Marlington, OH 5, Lady Marshals 4
Tied 2-2 after six innings of play, Chevelle Henson hit an inside the park home run that gave the Lady Marshals a 4-2 lead. Marlington tied it up at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on a 2-run triple then earned the walk-off win on a bases loaded run that came in when the batter was hit by a pitch.

West Allegheny, PA 5, Lady Marshals 2
Trailing 1-0 to start the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Marshals scored two runs on a triple by Allicen Harris and a ground ball hit by Gracelyn Darnall for a 2-1 lead. West Allegheny tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth and scored three runs in the top of the sixth for the 5-2 win on nine hits.

Allicen Harris had four hits including a double, two triples, three RBI’s and picked up a win from the circle over five games at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

April 3
Lady Marshals 6, Copley, OH 2
The Lady Marshals built a 6-0 lead through the first four innings on their way to their first win in Pigeon Forge. The first two runs came in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Madyson Morton and bases loaded walk from Chevelle Henson. Three more runs in the bottom of the third came on another hit by Morton, Marin Oakley scored on a catcher error and a hit by Anna Vasseur.

Oakley doubled in the bottom of the fourth and brought in the sixth run of the game. Copley avoided the shutout with a run in the sixth and one in the seventh. Gracelyn Darnall struck out two, walked zero, allowed five hits and two runs to earn the win.

Lady Marshals 6, General McLane, PA 1
Madyson Morton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second to send the base runners around and put the Lady Marshals on the board. General McLane tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth but the Lady Marshals responded with a big 5-run bottom of the fourth.

The go-ahead run came in on a single by Anna Vasseur. With the bases loaded, Chloe Coursey hit an inside the park grand slam that cleared the bases and gave the Lady Marshals the 6-1 win. Allicen Harris struck out six on her way to earning the win while allowing four hits and one run.

April 5

Despite outhitting Forbush 7-3, four errors by the Lady Marshals came into play on two of the runs scored. Trailing 3-0 after five innings, the Lady Marshals came close to scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Allicen Harris led off with a triple, but she was left stranded. Their one run came in the bottom of the sixth after Anna Vasseur led off with a single. A hit from Chloe Coursey moved Vasseur to second and she was brought home on a single by Gracelyn Darnall.

The 7-6 Lady Marshals will return to action on Monday, Apr. 10 when they host Paducah Tilghman (7-5). The Blue Tornado went 3-0 in games this week at the Florida Softball Beach Bash in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
