Seniors Charley Pursley and Tia Thorpe led the Lady Marshals at the plate in their 16-1 win over Mayfield on Monday and they advance to the Region 1 semi-finals against Paducah Tilghman who beat Hickman County 8-2.
Pursley went 4-for-5 with a triple and batted in two runs while Thorpe went 2-for-3, hitting a home run and brought in three runs.
This was Mayfield’s second straight year to advance to the Region 1 Tournament after making it last year for the first time in 19 years and their success of late continued after they knocked off Graves County 5-4 to win the 3rd District title. Their season comes to an end with a record of 14-11.
Mayfield struck first, scoring a run in the first inning after Jo Jo Fox led off with a triple and a double by Maddie Massey brought her home.
After both Chevelle Henson and Thorpe were hit by pitches to open the second inning, the Lady Marshals went on to score four runs on two outs. The first on a single by Purlsey then a flurry of three runs came across on a series of errors.
The Lady Marshals blew the game open with six runs in the fifth and six in the sixth.
In the fifth, Madyson Morton scored on a passed ball, Gracelyn Darnall brought in Emma Leigh Reynolds, running for Allicen Harris and Chloe Coursey scored on a bunt by Henson. Thorpe hit a two-run homer and Pursley came in on a hit by Anna Vasseur for a 10-1 lead.
Macy McLeod, running for Harris who reached when she was hit by a pitch, scored the first run of the sixth inning. Darnall drove in Coursey and a single by Thorpe brought home Kenzlee Terry, courtesy runner for Darnall. Henson scored on a wild pitch and Thorpe scored on Pursley’s triple. The 16th run was scored by Pursley who came across with Vasseur at the plate, out on a dropped third strike.
Mayfield scored their final run of the season in the bottom of the inning on a double by Lexie Feagin.
The win went to Harris who pitched the first three innings, allowing three hits, one run and struck out three. Darnall finished up the final three innings, allowing two hits, a run and struck out one.
The Lady Marshals will meet Paducah Tilghman in the first semi-final at 5:30 Tuesday followed by McCracken County and Graves County at Marshall County.
