City of Benton to be awarded nearly $900,000 in Federal Transportation funds for completion of local project

FRANKFORT, KY (May 19, 2022) — Federal Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) funds will be awarded to the City of Benton to construct sidewalks, improving resident access to over 70 businesses in the area.

“I’m grateful for this allocation of federal funding that will help the City of Benton and its residents in numerous ways,” state Senator Danny Carroll (R-Benton) said. “These improvements will accommodate pedestrian traffic and positively impact both the local economy and the lives of those who live here.”

The projects will include the construction of five-foot-wide sidewalks along at least seven streets, which will connect residents to local businesses and services. The sidewalks will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

“I want to commend the City of Benton for its initiative in applying for these available funds,” Carroll said. “TAP funding is something I would encourage all local communities to apply for where there are projects that meet the federal program’s criteria. I look forward to seeing the completion of this project and appreciate all involved in making it possible.”

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) TAP web page, the program provides funding for surface transportation projects such as on and off-road pedestrian and bicycle lanes, infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public transportation and enhanced mobility, community improvement activities, environmental mitigation and safe school route projects. Local leaders apply for funding, and KYTC awards it to qualifying projects meeting the program’s goals. Awards cover 80 percent of program costs.
