
Velma DeJarnatt Arington, age 93, of Lovelaceville, Kentucky passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021 during her winter visit to Florida.
Velma was born in Cunningham on January 26, 1928 to the late Earley and Iva Puckett DeJarnatt. She was a member of Lovelaceville Baptist Church. As a teenager, Velma accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized in a small pond near her parents’ farm. After high school, Velma married John (Bill) Arington. Velma and John traveled many of the southern United States as John worked construction as a Cement Mason. After returning to Ballard County, Kentucky, they built a home and raised their daughter Judy Laine. Velma also worked at the International Shoe Company in Paducah, Kentucky. Velma was typical of her generation; she believed in working hard, paying your bills, protecting your family and working out your own personal salvation with the Lord. She was often described as a “strong-willed” woman. During her later years Velma’s favorite things included; a honey bun and black coffee for breakfast, a competitive game of Rook, watching the Kentucky Wildcats basketball game on television, a fried catfish and onion ring dinner, a daily walk in the warm Florida sunshine, and especially visiting with her grandchildren CW and Patrick, and her great grandchildren Avett Laine and Zella Mae.
Velma is survived by one daughter, Judy McGee and husband Mike of Greenbrier, Tennessee; one step daughter, Joyce Brown of Kevil; two sisters, Maude Sims of Cunningham and Jo June Woodford of Blandville; two grandchildren, CW and Patrick McGee, both of Nashville, Tennessee; and two great grandchildren Zella Mae McGee and Avett Laine McGee, also of Nashville, Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John “Bill” Arington; one sister, Dorothy Solomon; three brothers, Glenford DeJarnatt, Eugene DeJarnatt and Leon DeJarnatt; and her parents.
Funeral services for Velma will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday December 30, 2021 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah, Kentucky. Family members are invited to attend the burial at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cunningham following the service.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Wednesday December 29, 2021 at the funeral home.
