Travel Discouraged in Tornado Damage Corridor

Caution required due to traffic signal outages

PADUCAH, Ky.  Crews from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 are working in multiple areas assisting with emergency response efforts along the tornado corridor – particularly in Graves County and Marshall County.

Crews worked through the night and continue to work today moving downed trees, debris and other road hazards from highways, county roads and streets to allow emergency responders to gain access to the damage corridor.

KYTC personnel are continuing to assist other first responding agencies with heavy equipment to move debris as needed.

The KYTC District 1 signal crew is working on damaged traffic signals as power is restored.  However, there are numerous traffic signals that will be out of service for an extended time.  Some could be out of service for a week or more.  As far as possible, 4-Way Stop signs have been placed at of those intersections.  If a signal is in flash mode, treat it as a 4-Way Stop.  When in doubt, treat it as a 4-Way Stop.

Local law enforcement has closed several roads for an undetermined amount of time due to the severe damage in the area. Utility crews are also closing some roadways to enhance safety and speed efforts to restore power.  Some areas are not accessible to the public.  The KYTC is asking for patience as our crews and other first responders continue to operate during this difficult time.

Motorists are specifically asked to avoid travel in areas where there is an active tornado response effort.  There have been numerous instances where responders and utility crews have been hampered in their efforts due to traffic gridlock created by unnecessary travel.  Please stay home and allow emergency crews to complete their work.

Police will take appropriate action to issue citations to anyone who contributes to traffic gridlock that hampers the movement of emergency responders, utility crews, and cleanup efforts.

KYTC crews are transitioning from moving debris to loading and hauling debris out of the heaviest hit areas.  Motorists should be alert for trucks hauling material.  Crews will be focused on removing debris efficiently and safely.

Updates as appropriate.
