Trigg County Emergency Management reports all lanes of Interstate 24 are blocked at the 62 mile marker due to a SEMI crash and fire.
Multiple fire departments and agencies are responded to the initial crash and fire.
The truck landed on top of the centerline barrier wall, then caught fire. All lanes of I-24 are blocked in the work zone.
This is in the work zone that runs from the 55 to 65 mile marker with 2-way traffic running on the eastbound lanes with a centerline barrier wall.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet personnel from neighboring counties will be assisting the Trigg County crew and area police agencies with traffic control along the detour route.
The crash and fire damaged the new concrete roadway on I-24, as well as the centerline barrier wall in the work zone. The additional work required to reopen the I-24 has forced a reassessment of the duration of this event.
Estimated duration is extended 16 hours to approximately 12 Noon, CDT, on Tuesday.
There is a permanently marked detour for this section of I-24 along U.S. 68 and KY 139 between Exit 65 and Exit 56. However, traffic is congested along the detour.
Motorists traveling between Paducah and Nashville should consider a detour via Interstate 69 South at Exit 25 to follow U.S. 68 East to return to I-24 at Exit 65. This will avoid traffic congestion along the main detour.
I-69 and the Pennyrile Parkway also provide a detour opportunity between Exit 82 and Exit 43.
Updates as they become available.
