Lady Marshals hold off Calloway County in high scoring contest

McKenzie Elkins was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Lady Marshals in their 14-11 win over Calloway County. She hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth and finished with three RBIs.

Leading 10-2 at the end of three innings, it looked like the Lady Marshals were cruising to a district sweep of Calloway County and the number one seed in the tournament, but the Lady Lakers thought otherwise.

Calloway added nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 11-11 before the Lady Marshals pulled away with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth to win 14-11.

The two teams combined for 28 hits over six and a half innings. For the Lady Marshals, McKenzie Elkins was 3-for-4 with a home run in the bottom of the sixth and three RBIs, Charley Pursley went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Lane Pea 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Presley Jezik, Riley Piercefield and Sarenna Tomassi all hit triples.

Bailee Grogan went 3-for-5 for Calloway County with a double and two RBIs and Emerson Grogan was 3-for-4 with a double and a fourth inning solo home run.

Gabbi Lovett pitched the first three and a third innings and Tia Thorpe closed out the fourth before freshman Gracelyn Darnall finished out the game to earn the win, allowing three hits and zero runs.

Three stolen bases by Pursley brings her season total to 35 – fourth best in the state – just one behind two players with 36. Her 50 hits ranks third after adding six more to her total in games this week. The Lady Marshals 301 hits on the season ranks first in the state, a combined 126 stolen bases ranks fourth and their batting average of .410 is 14th best.

Monday, the Lady Marshals beat Hickman County 9-2 on 17 hits. Lovett earned the win over four innings, allowing five hits and one run.

At the plate, Edwards went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs, Pursley was 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs, Jezik 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Pea 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a solo home run in the top of the fourth.

Cayson Conner was safe at third base in the first inning of the Lady Marshals district win over Calloway County which secured the #1 seed in the 4th District Tournament.
