KYTC District 1 Highway Crews Mobilize to Combat Overnight Ice Accumulation

PADUCAH, KY (Feb. 11, 2021)- – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 crews ramped up ice-fighting activities at 4 a.m., today.  Several crews had personnel called in at 1 a.m., to respond to reports of slick spots.

Crews are working with a sense of urgency as they spread salt and other ice-fighting chemicals to get area highways as clear as possible while temperatures are in the mid-20s today.

While the freezing precipitation has ended across the 12 counties of District 1, there is still an opportunity for freezing precipitation today.  There are also opportunities for re-freezing and some freezing fog may be possible around larger bodies of water.

The KYTC District 1 Snow & Ice Team is focused on treating as many miles of highway as possible today.  As low temperatures drop into the low teens over the weekend, salt and other ice-fighting chemicals become less-effective below about 16 degrees. Cold temperatures going into the weekend are expected to reduce the ability of highway crews to improve driving conditions through about Tuesday.

KYTC engineers continue to remind everyone to limit travel due to the potential for hazardous driving conditions.
