Master Gardener Barbara Ray joined us recently on WCBL’s Coffee Call program. The spring planting season will be here before you know it, and one thing Ray said that she’s hearing is that seeds will be in short supply this year. A caller on the program asked about when to trim roses. She said her rule of thumb is, “when the forsythia blooms it’s time to prune.” And when it comes to pruning shrubs, she says it’s best to wait until after they flower. On caller asked Ray what was the best tomato plant. She said it all depends on what type of tomato you enjoy the most because there are a lot of good varieties out there. And as far as what to send on Valentine’s Day? She says roses are still the top choice.
