Lady Marshals win district title, 3-0 over Calloway County

The Lady Marshals are the 2020 Fourth District Champions, taking the title for the first time since the 2016 season in a straight set win over Calloway County.

A post-season that almost didn’t happen for the Marshall County volleyball team, ended in a Fourth District Championship, the first since the 2016 season. The Lady Marshals defeated Calloway County 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-18) to win the title. Both teams advance to the First Region Tournament scheduled to get underway next week. The Lady Marshals will play Graves County on Tuesday at 7:30 at McCracken County High School.

Coach Laura Kinder and the team discovered they had possibly been exposed to COVID-19 and would have to quarantine after their last game on Oct. 10 at Henderson County. They weren’t able to play their final regular season game against CCA on Oct. 15 but would make the district tournament with some schedule adjustments.

“This has been a season unlike any other that anyone could have ever imagined”, Coach Kinder said. “A little over a week ago we thought our season was going to be over and thank goodness our quarantine was up just in time to move our game and get to play.”

Calloway County beat CFS 3-2 on Monday to advance to the title game. Marshall County, the #1 seed in the tournament, was scheduled to play the second semi-final Saturday morning against Murray, but the Lady Tigers had to forfeit the game due to COVID-19 issues.

Winning the first set 25-8 and the second 25-13, set three was more competitive. After the Lady Marshals went up 10-3, the Lady Lakers cut the lead down to three points at 12-9 but would get no closer as the Lady Marshals stretched their lead to seven points at 20-13 and closed out the set and win 25-18.

“You wouldn’t have known these girls hadn’t touched a ball in two weeks watching them play today”, Kinder said. “They laugh, saying they’re a scrappy team now and I said yeah you are…they’ve never been scrappy before but they sure are this year and I just couldn’t be more proud of them.”

All-District and All-Tournament Teams were announced following the game.
