Cave-in-Rock Ferry Temporarily Closed Due to High Winds

Paducah, Ky (June 10, 2020)– The Cave-in-Rock Ferry is temporarily closed due to high winds.

Winds along the Ohio River are running about 20 miles an hour out of the west at the ferry crossing. Anytime the wind runs upstream it can create hazardous river conditions.

The ferry halted operations at 10 a.m., CDT.

Based on the weather forecast, winds are expected to remain high well into the evening hours today.

The Cave-in-Rock Ferry will attempt to provide timely notice when service is able to resume. If the ferry is unable to resume service this evening, operations will resume at 6 a.m., Thursday, on the normal schedule.

The Cave-In-Rock Ferry connects KY 91 with ILLINOIS Route 1 across the Ohio River between Crittenden County, KY, and Hardin County, IL.

The ferry normally operates from 6:00 a.m. to 9:50 p.m. central time, 7 days a week. The ferry carries about 500 vehicles across the Ohio River in an average day.

The Cave-In-Rock Ferry is at Ohio River navigation mile point 881.0.

The Cave-In-Rock Ferry is operated by an independent contractor with joint funding from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Illinois Department of Transportation through a ferry authority.

Video and photos of the ferry’s final run today are posted at www.facebook.com/CIRFerry.
