Emergency Road Aid Funds Awarded to Ballard County for Culvert Repair on Batts Road

PADUCAH, Ky. (May 11, 2020) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) today announced the Ballard County Fiscal Court will receive $6,180 in county road aid emergency funds for repairs to a damaged drainage structure on Batts Road (County Road 1208).

The drainage repairs will benefit Ballard County residents, commuters, and farmers who regularly travel Batts Road.

“The Transportation Cabinet is pleased to assist Ballard County by providing this emergency funding for the replacement of a damaged culvert. This will help assure safe and reliable transportation connections for the community,” said Transportation Secretary Jim Gray.

The emergency funds, authorized on May 8, 2020, are to assist with the repair of a culvert that carries a tributary of Cane Creek under Batts Road just east of the North Ballard Church Road intersection.

According to Ballard County Judge-Executive Todd Cooper, the culvert was damaged by flash flooding in March.

“We had damage to several major culverts during the March 21st flash flood event,” Judge Cooper said. “This culvert was so badly damaged we had to fill it in. It’s been causing some farmland to flood. We have a new culvert on our lot ready to be installed as soon as we can get several days of good weather to line up so our road department can do the work. Without this critical emergency funding from the Transportation Cabinet, our ability to properly maintain roads across the county would be taking a big financial hit.”

Cooper noted that Batts Road directly serves 8 homes and is a cut-through for farmers and commuter traffic between KY 1290/Slater Road and KY 1345/Myers Road.

The KYTC Department of Rural and Municipal Aid withholds a percentage of funding specifically to assist cities and counties with emergency repairs and maintenance.

The Ballard County Fiscal Court is responsible for all phases of the repair work. A check will be issued directly to the county.
