South Marshall Middle student receives parade of support

Dylan Nanney (center) enjoyed a drive-by parade on Monday to lift his spirits before his trip back to St. Jude’s on Tuesday. He even received his favorite drink  – a Sonic Sprite with extra ice.

South Marshall Middle School student, Dylan Nanney, was diagnosed with stage four undifferentiated round cell sarcoma in March 2017. Since then, Dylan has spent a lot of his time at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis undergoing treatment.

Dylan is heading back to St. Jude’s today (May 5) but before he left, the South Marshall Middle School staff wanted to lift his spirits so they organized “Dylan’s Drive-By” which took place on Monday. A long line of well-wishers that included local first responders, faculty and staff of SMMS and many friends, paraded past Dylan’s home to show their love and support for the 14-year-old.

“The drive-by parade for Dylan was really uplifting, not only for him, but for me as well”, said Dylan’s dad Jason Nanney. “It goes to show how great our community is and love and support we have from everyone.”

Jason said it was also emotional because it made them realize Dylan is not fighting this alone. His family, friends and community are fighting this with him.

“As a father, this is the hardest thing I have every had to face”, Jason said. “I feel helpless but with the good Lord, we can and will get through this.”

Jason said as they head back to St. Jude’s, their emotions run from worried to scared and also a sense of relief knowing they will get the results once his scans are complete.

“All we can do is hit our knees and pray that they come back good”, Jason said.
