Mowing crews continue work along Kentucky highways (D1)

PADUCAH, Ky. (Oct 14, 2019) — Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews and contract crews have started their fall round of mowing along Interstates, parkways, and state highways in the KYTC District 1 region.

Mowing zones will be marked by appropriate signage and should be treated with the same respect and caution as other work zones. Drivers are urged to slow down and watch for slow-moving tractors and support vehicles that may be required to travel into and across travel lanes from time to time as they go about their work.  Motorists should also be mindful of personnel in close proximity to traffic flow in areas with ongoing mowing or litter removal activities.

As a reminder, political signs and other advertising are not allowed along state right-of-way and should be removed.  Yard signs and other signs create both an obstacle and a safety hazard for mowing crews and will be removed by state personnel.

Contractors are working along area Interstates, parkways, and US highways.  State crews are ramping up mowing activities along U.S. Highways, as well as along rural secondary highways in many Western Kentucky counties.

Specifically, crews are ramping up mowing activities at the following locations:

  • KY 453/Dover Road and The Trace in Land Between The Lakes from Grand Rivers southward to the KY-TN State Line starting today
  • Interstate 24 from the Ohio River Bridge at mile point 0.0 to the KY-TN State line in Christian County starting Oct 21
  • S. 60 from I-24 Exit 4 to the McCracken-Ballard County Line starting around Oct 22
  • KY 1954/John Puryear Drive from I-24 Exit 11 to the John Puryear Bridge around Oct 24
  • S. 68 from I-24 Exit 16 to the U.S. 62 intersection around Oct 25

Mowing and litter crews will continue to have active work zones across the region anytime weather conditions allow for about the next month.  Again, motorists should use appropriate caution anytime they encounter a mowing zone.

As with all work zones, there are a number of things motorists should remember:

The #1 cause of work zone crashes is distracted driving

The majority of work zone victims are motorists

Kentucky recorded 3 work zone fatalities in 2018
