Woman, child escape house fire uninjured

A woman and her 3-year-old son managed to escape unharmed Friday after their home caught fire near Tatumsville.

East Marshall Fire Chief Tex Johnson said crews responded just after 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5 to a structure fire at 1741 Tatumsville Highway in Gilbertsville. Johnson said the resident spotted smoke and fled the home with her son. Remaining family members were not home at the time of the incident.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, however Johnson said the homeowner was taken to a local hospital via Marshall County EMS for an unrelated issue.

The home was a total loss, Johnson said.

“It was an older structure,” Johnson said. “So, it was an (inaudible) house, and more built on to it, and more built on to it and more built on to it. And that complicates the construction works and putting the fire out.”

Fire crews were able to contain the blaze and prevent spread to any neighboring properties or facilities.

Johnson declined to speculate the cause of the fire on record, though he said state fire marshals had not been called to investigate.

East Marshall, Gilbertsville and Palma-Briensburg fire departments, as well as the Marshall County Rescue Squad responded on scene.
