
Benton, IL – Leading by as much as 19 in the fourth quarter, the Marshals survived a late game surge from Edwards County, IL to win 57-51 in Saturday’s game at the Benton, IL Shootout.
The Marshals opened up a 7-0 lead over Edwards County to start the game before the Lions got on the board, finishing the quarter out-scoring the Marshals 9-4 to trail by just two.
A field goal by Tristen Prange, free throw by Tyler Stokes and three point play from Dylan Walters combined for a 22-13 Marshals lead in the second quarter and leading 27-19 at the end of the half, Stokes scored just before the buzzer and was fouled, making his free throw to put the Marshals up 30-19.
The Marshals stretched their lead out to 14 points in the third quarter at 43-19 and went on to go up by 19 points in the fourth that began with a three point play by Aaron Reed. Edwards County started to chip away at their deficit, cutting it to 10 points at 56-46. Reed added the Marshals final point on a free throw and the Lions got a final basket from Jarod Columbia to cut the loss to six points.
Edwards County’s Nathaniel Schmittler led all scorers with 15 points, Walters led the Marshals with 12 with 11 a piece coming from French and Reed.
