Late game goals lift Marshals over Murray 5-1

The Marshals celebrate the goal by Eric Hicks in the final 10 and a half minutes that gave them a 2-1 lead on their way to beat Murray 5-1.

Despite the 5-1 final score, the Marshals game against Murray was the typical clash between the two district rivals – at times combative with 19 fouls called in the game, 12 of them on the Tigers. A long direct kick seven minutes in by Murray senior Chase Renick eased in the goal just under the cross bar for a 1-0 lead that held until the final 15 minutes of the game when the Marshals exploded for five goals.

“We kept telling them, if we get one we’ll get two and we’ll get three and then it will be up to us how many we get after that”, said Head Coach Bryan Blevins.

A straight red card was issued to Murray’s Trey Boggess just under seven minutes into the second half, forcing the Tigers to play a man down the rest of the way.

The five goals in the final 15 minutes began with a John Wood goal that tied it and Eric Hicks scored the go-ahead. William Lynch fired in a penalty kick then followed it up with his 14th goal of the season on an assist from Collin Riley. Wood scored his second goal of the game to finish off the 5-1 win.

“We didn’t play bad tonight…if we didn’t shoot it and it deflect off them, we deflected off ourselves or shot it into ourselves from the three yard line”, Blevins said.  “Credit to the boys, they didn’t get frustrated, thought they might but they just kept fighting because they knew it was coming.”

The Marshals took 29 shots to Murray’s eight, had 17 on goal while the Tigers were held to four. The Marshals had 13 corners and sophomore keeper Steven Claborn had three saves. Despite allowing the five goals, Murray keeper Josh Eaton made some big saves finishing with 12 in the game.

Marshall County (6-0-1) will host McCracken County (3-2) on Thursday in a varsity only game at 6:00.
