2020 in a Box

What a year! 2020 has been, to say the least, unpredictable. This year has been filled with many events that have taken not only the United States but also the world by storm. Part of the royal family took the initiative to step down as senior royals, Kobe Bryant passed away, Donald Trump was impeached, the stock market crashed, Black Lives Matter protests went worldwide, oh, and don’t forget the tragic Covid-19 pandemic. With all of the occurrences that have happened this year, the MCHS leadership class wanted to make sure this year was remembered by the future classes at our high school. We thought a time capsule would do the job! The details of this project were created by our class with our teacher, Mrs. Kinder. This time capsule will consist of items that symbolize the year 2020. Some examples of appropriate items are: journal entries, masks, hand sanitizer, pop culture symbols (popular movies, tv shows, music, etc.) news articles, pictures, or anything that you feel represents 2020 that is school appropriate. The box will be located at the front office at MCHS and items can be dropped off from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. December 8th-18th.

This project took a great deal of collaboration and we would like for everyone in our school to take part in it. Not only did the Leadership class collaborate, but also other teachers. “Mrs. Conley actually came up with the idea. I thought it was awesome because this year has been so weird, but also because so many important historical events occurred, such as the impeachment of President Trump and the vast protests about racial equality.”

Mrs. Kinder then explained, “I want everyone to have fun with it. I want us all to be able to find some joy in this difficult time. I also want to provide students 20 years from now with primary documents so they can truly understand what it’s like. I also wanted my students to focus on the leadership qualities on our graduate profile.”

We are hoping that everyone takes part in this project and gets creative. Freshman Jayden Rupp said, “It’s a nice way to remember the apocalypse.” That is definitely a way this year could be described with all of the crazy things that have happened. Aside from the pandemic, so many important events have occurred, and Jayden said she would put a “Black Lives Matter” flag in the box. The BLM movement is a very important issue that our country has only begun to tackle, and it’s something that definitely needs to be remembered.

2020 has been a crazy year that has caused a lot of people to change, adapt, and learn new things. Jayden continued, “It’s been impactful on my life because it’s opened my eyes to different things like police brutality and how much I rely on the government; the government is not reliable. The government will worry about themselves first other than the people. I hope that people aren’t as ignorant next year and that the world will mature soon.”

Although these thoughts aren’t the happiest, these issues have helped to open the door for our country to grow. We can’t forget that in people’s lives some things have gotten better in ways, or allowed them to improve.

This time capsule is not only an amazing way to remember the good and the bad of 2020, but also a great way for future generations that will see it to truly understand the hardships and the victories of our generations.
