A peaceful protest was organized by a private citizen and took place on the Court Square in Benton, on Friday from 5:30-7:30.
On their Facebook page, the Benton Police Department thanked those who attended saying, “The message that was spread was one of peace, equality, and unity. This is the type of message that we should all get behind and support. We are proud of our community.”
Citizens took to social media in support of the peaceful protest, proud that it was held in Marshall County, many saying it was a huge step forward for the community and hope for a more open dialogue about racism. Chants of “I can’t breath”, “hands up – don’t shoot” and “no justice – no peace” were intertwined with speeches and moments of prayer.
Local leaders and law enforcement blocked traffic from the court square and worked together to provide safety for the protestors.
