North Marshall Middle Students Attend Kentucky Youth Assembly

Sixteen North Marshall Middle School students attended the Kentucky Youth Assembly hosted by the YMCA from Dec. 15-17 in Louisville, KY, from Dec. 15-17. The Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA) is a 3-day expanded educational opportunity in which students serve as part of a model state government. KYA offers students the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of issues, develop critical thinking skills, and articulate their beliefs while engaging constructively with their peers from around the Commonwealth through a mock legislative assembly. The students at North Marshall proposed two bills. The first bill required mandatory bag checks and metal detectors for all students entering public schools. The second bill placed a cap of the out-of-pocket expense for insulin. Nearly 180 bills were presented at KYA, and only 10% of the bills completely passed the assembly. North Marshall students were able to pass both bills they presented. The bill debate took place in the Kentucky Capitol Annex.
