Marshals shutout Mayfield 6-0, advance to district championship

Bryson Penn’s hat trick led the Marshals in their 6-0 win over Mayfield Tuesday in the Second District Tournament.

Marshall County and Mayfield played in Tuesday’s Second District boy’s semi-final after Mayfield advanced with a 1-0 win on Monday over Calloway County. The Marshals won 6-0 to advance to Thursday’s championship against the winner of Wednesday’s Murray/Graves County game.

Bryson Penn scored the Marshals first goal, 20 minutes in on an assist from Sean Janiec. Penn made it 2-0 just 10 minutes later on an assist by Pratik Patel for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Collin Riley scored on a Penn assist in the second half for a 3-0 Marshall County lead followed by a goal from Penn for the hat trick, on a direct kick with 21 minutes left and a 4-0 lead. A couple of minutes later, William Lynch found the net off an assist by Kiefer Court to put the Marshal up 5-0. In stoppage time, Drake May drilled one in the net for the final goal of the game and a 6-0 win that punches the Marshals ticket into the Regional Tournament.

The Marshals took 31 shots, 21 of those on goal and one save by Ben Burkeen. Mayfield had five shots, one on goal and keeper Diego Juarez had 16 saves. Mayfield’s season ends with a record of 6-10-3.

Nick Mighell kept the ball from Mayfield’s Antonio Perez (25) and moved it quickly up the sideline in the Marshals 6-0 shutout over the Cardinals.
