The Marshals followed up Friday’s win at the Best of the West with an impressive early season team score of 293 by duplicating that score in the Dawson Springs Invitational on Saturday at Pennyrile Forest State Park.
The 293 however fell just short in a 2-stroke loss to the Bowling Green team who shot 291.Trigg County came in third place with a team score of 311.
The Marshals were led by junior Jay Nimmo who tied for medalist honors with Collier Curd of Bowling Green, both shooting 67 (5-under par). Inclement weather cancelled a playoff between the two so a scorecard playoff was used to determine the medalist and Curd was declared the winner. Rocko Zakutney of St. Mary took third place with a score of 68.
Marshall scores behind Nimmo’s 67 – Tyler Powell shot even par 72, Camdyn McLeod shot 76, Trey Wall carded a 78 and Preston Futrell shot 85.
“I’m really proud of our team and the players efforts”, Coach Keith Bell said. “Being able to shoot 5-over par for a team score on two consecutive days on two different courses is outstanding. Hats off to Bowling Green today, they played well also and edged us out for the win.”
Bell said the players were able to make the necessary adjustments for the course today and played extremely well and he hopes the team can take the momentum of the first two successful tournaments into next week when they go up against some of the best teams in the state of Kentucky on Monday in the Gator Invitational at Bowling Green Country Club and Wednesday in Lexington in the Kentucky Cup at the University Club of Kentucky Wildcat course. Bell said the two tournaments will be a true test for the team.
