Lady Marshals advance to play Calloway County in district title game

Kinley Edwards hit an RBI double in the fourth inning and scored two runs in the Lady Marshals 13-1 4th District Tournament semi-final win over Christian Fellowship.

Marshall County and Christian Fellowship met in Monday’s second 4th District Tournament semi-final following a Calloway County 6-5 win over Murray. The Lady Marshals beat CFS 21-0 and 17-0 earlier in the season, each game going three innings. That was not the case Monday evening in Murray, the Lady Eagles who re-entered district play this season, avoided a shut-out in a 13-1 loss.

Scoreless through the first two innings, the Lady Eagles threatened in the top of the second but left runners stranded at first and third.

The Lady Marshals offense got rolling in the bottom of the third, starting with a walk to Sarenna Tomassi and single by Presley Jezik – both stealing bases to advance to second and third – brought in on a 2-run single by Cayson Conner. Riley Piercefield reached base on an error with two outs and a run scored on the same error for a 3-0 lead. Kinley Edwards reached on an error and Layne Pea loaded the bases, reaching base on a dropped third strike.

Mckenzie Elkins cleared the bases with a 3-run triple to make it a 6-0 game. Tomassi hit an RBI single and Jezik reached on an error which brought in a run for an 8-0 lead followed by an RBI triple by Conner to go up 9-0.

Edie Little led off the top of the fourth inning for CFS with a double and Abigail Cima was hit by a pitch to put two base runners on for the Lady Eagles. Rachel Howard hit into a double play and with two outs, Zailey McClain stepped up and hit an RBI double to put CFS on the board. Gracey Murt relieved Gabbi Lovett on the mound for the Lady Marshals and Murt struck out Renee Shields for the third out.

Marshall County added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a double by Edwards, sacrifice by Elkins and RBI doubles from Jezik and Conner to take a 13-1 lead. Ashley Kendall reached on a single for CFS in the top of the fifth but left stranded with the final out of the game.

The Lady Marshals advance to Tuesday’s 4th District Championship against Calloway County, first pitch at 5:30 at Murray High. CFS finishes the 2019 season 13-17 with only one senior leaving the young squad.

Gabbi Lovett got the win in three and two-thirds innings on the mound, striking out two, allowing four hits and one run. Murt struck out four batters in her one and a third innings. Conner went three for four at the plate with a double, triple and four RBIs, Elkins had a triple and four RBIs and both Edwards and Tomassi hit doubles with an RBI each. For CFS, Little and McClain hit doubles and McClain earned the RBI.
