Barrier Wall Installation for Double Crossover Diamond Project at Paducah starting Sunday Night, March 10th

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans to start installation of a median barrier wall along a section of US 60 near the I-24 Paducah Exit 4 Interchange on Sunday night, March 10, 2019.

This barrier wall installation along US 60 between the Interstate 24 Exit 4 Paducah interchange and the New Holt Road intersection is part of ramping up construction for the addition of a Double Crossover Diamond (DCD) along US 60 at the interchange.

Motorists should be alert for heavy equipment starting installation of the median barrier wall along the center turn lane at approximately 8:00 p.m., CT, Sunday.  Installation of the barrier wall is expected to take about two nights to complete.  Once the median barrier is in place left turns will only be allowed at signalized intersections.  There will be no left turn from eastbound US 60 to New Holt Road northbound into the Mall area.

Initially, the contractor will be working mainly at night to help minimize traffic disruptions.  Some daytime and weekend work may be required.  Lane restrictions will be in place during working hours at various locations along the project. One lane will remain open at all times for each direction of travel. Appropriate signage will be in place to guide motorists.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks motorists to be aware of the work zone and to utilize safe driving habits when traveling through the work area.  The project runs along US 60 from near the New Holt Road intersection at milepoint 10.130 extending eastward through the I-24 Paducah Exit 4 Interchange to near the Coleman Road intersection at milepoint 10.891.

Jim Smith Contracting, of Grand Rivers, Ky., is the prime contractor on this $9,179,425 highway improvement project. Work is expected to be completed by November.

By moving traffic in a way that avoids left turns across oncoming traffic and eliminating a phase at each traffic signal, the DCD is designed to increase through capacity along US 60 through the commercial area west of the interchange, as well as improving left turn movements from the I-24 ramps.
