UPDATE: Westbound Work Zone on I-24 Tennessee River Bridge Extended to 28mm

Update: A truck pulling a Low-Boy trailer westbound on I-24 bottomed out on a bridge that crosses the P&L Railroad near the 28 mile marker.  This damaged the deck of the bridge creating a traffic hazard.

To allow KY Transportation Cabinet engineers to evaluate the damage, the westbound work zone on the Tennessee River Bridge at the 30 mile marker has been extended across the railroad overpass at milepoint 28.518.

Motorists should be aware that this extended work zone could be in place for several days while a repair plan is developed for the deck of the railroad overpass.

Updates as appropriate.

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict WESTBOUND traffic to one lane on Interstate 24 at the 30 mile marker to allow joint work on the westbound Tennessee River Bridge starting Tuesday, October 23, 2018.

All westbound traffic will initially move to the left-hand or passing lane.  This westbound work zone will include a barrier wall with a maximum 16 ft. load width restriction.

Westbound motorists on I-24 should be alert for slowing and merging traffic as they approach the 30 mile marker in Livingston County.

As a reminder, EASTBOUND traffic continues to be restricted to one lane at the 30 mile marker along Interstate 24 on the Tennessee River Bridge.  This existing eastbound work zone on I-24 now includes a barrier wall and a maximum 16 ft. load width restriction.

Both of these work zones are expected to be active until about December 1, 2018.

A number of overnight closures will be required to facilitate installation of new joints on both bridges.  The contractor will attempt to provide timely advance notice of these overnight closures and a required detour to allow installation of the new joints.

Motorists traveling I-24 both eastbound and westbound should be prepared to encounter slowing and merging traffic as they approach the 30 mile marker.

To reduce the potential for delays during peak travel periods, eastbound and westbound commuters who travel I-24 daily should consider a self-detour around this work zone via US 62 and KY 453 between I-24 Calvert City Exit 27 and I-24 Grand Rivers-Smithland Exit 31.  Again, some night closures with a detour will be required to facilitate the work from time to time.

American Contracting & Services of Jeffersonville, IN, is the prime contractor on this $1.1 Million bridge joint replacement project.  The contractor anticipates completing the work around December 1, 2018.

The Interstate 24 Tennessee River Bridge consists of twin tied arch suspension structures at mile point 29.352 at the Marshall-Livingston County Line.

The 2,017 ft. structures with a 534 ft. main span are also known as the Luther Draffen Bridge. The I-24 Tennessee River Bridge opened to traffic in 1974. The bridge carries approximately 30,000 vehicles across the Tennessee River in an average day.
