Gunn’s three goals lead Lady Marshals in 5-1 win over Graves County

Carmen Gunn with another hat trick against Graves County, her third in all three of the Lady Marshals wins.

Coming off a tough 5-1 loss to Greenwood Saturday, the Lady Marshals took care of business in their 5-1 district win over Graves County Tuesday, handing the Lady Eagles their first loss of the season. The Lady Marshals took 15 shots, 12 on goal with two corners in the win. Graves County had 17 shots, 10 on goal and no corners.

Graves County surprised the Lady Marshals with a goal 38 seconds into the game from Madeline Byrd. Fifteen minutes in, the equalizer came from Kylee Crass and two closing first half goals by Carmen Gunn, one unassisted and the second on an assist by Lindy King in stoppage time, put the Lady Marshals up 3-1 at halftime.

An own goal gave the Lady Marshals a 4-1 lead five minutes into the second half with the final goal from Gunn, her third in the game, on a penalty kick 25 minutes into the half following a foul on MJ Freeman in the box.

The Lady Marshals improve to 3-1, their one loss to Greenwood in a game Head Coach Michael Boone said, while not the result they wanted it was a good early test to identify some strengths and weaknesses going forward.

“We got off to a bad start and we let their Auburn signee pick us apart for their first four goals, but we showed some signs late in the first half of being able to move the ball some, and we created a couple of positive opportunities”, Boone said.

Greenwood had 27 shots in the game, 17 on goal and seven corner while the Lady Marshals had seven shots, five of those on goal. Their one goal came from Gunn on an assist by King late in the first half.

Another district double-header is up next at Calloway County on Thursday.
