MCD introduces new ‘On the Farm’ page

It has been said that the heart of a family can be found in the kitchen, and we suppose that’s somewhat true. Few things bring a family together like a good home-cooked dinner at Grandma’s, laughing and enjoying the fruits of a long day in the kitchen and a longer season in the garden; the smell of rain and earth when it’s time to bring in the vegetables and the feel of your hands after a day spent cleaning and cutting, canning, bagging and freezing. It’s the feeling of home.

The same could be said of a community, the roots of which can be traced back to those same kitchens and gardens and farms. It’s a history that continues in time-honored traditions and in the rebirth of those hoping to establish that connection once more.

Though large, multi acre farms are still intrinsic in the fabric of Marshall County, in recent years we’ve seen a transition. The gardens and hobby farms, free range chickens and beekeeping, things that have always found their place in the agricultural community but in recent years have experienced a resurgence. The landscape of what most know as agriculture is growing and changing, but that feeling of home remains constant.

It’s that change and that feeling we want to capture. Thus, we present a new addition to Marshall County Daily: On the Farm.

Here, you’ll find anything and everything related to agriculture, from major industry news like hemp industry development to tips on growing the best petunias or how to keep pests from scavenging your garden without using chemicals, pictures of your prize winning jams and jellies at the fair, recipes to use with your garden haul or tips for beginners on how to get started. This page will – hopefully – offer a little of something for everyone. Most importantly, we hope it will offer a glimpse into that indellible spirit of home, and the dinner table of the community.

To make it work, though, we need your help. Know a little something about gardening? Send us your tips. Have a killer recipe for fresh relish or delicious apple pie? Share it with us. Proud of your chickens? We want pictures. Help us bring the life and feeling of home into the page.
