Gardner’s two goals in stoppage gives Marshals 5-3 win

Daniel Gardner’s two goals in stoppage time against Fort Campbell broke the tie and gave the Marshals a 5-3 win.

Following a week off from competition, the Marshals traveled to Fort Campbell Thursday evening to play the 1-3 Falcons whose only win came in the first game of the season over Trigg County. Neither team scored in the first half and at times it looked like the Marshals might hand the Falcons their second win of the season.

Fort Campbell struck first early in the second half on a goal by Rafeal Cerritos but the game was then tied on a goal by Daniel Gardner 16 minutes into the half. The Marshals took the lead at the midway point of the half on a goal by Parker Jennings with an assist by Ben Sampson and that was followed by a Seth Strader goal on a direct kick for a 3-1 Marshall County lead.

Austin Stockdale was just inches from scoring on back to back kicks on goal that hit off the left post both times. Leaving the door open for Fort Campbell, the Falcons scored on a goal by freshman Kenyon Ward with two minutes remaining to make it a 3-2 game.

In stoppage time, Fort Campbell tied the game on a goal by Monroe Thomas and it looked like it would end there. As stoppage time continued and the teams expecting the whistle at any moment, play continued and the Marshals didn’t quit. Gardner scored two more goals for the hat trick with six minutes into extra time and another 15 minutes in for the 5-3 win.

The Marshals improve to 6-2 and will gear up for a second district match up with Murray on Tuesday. Marshall County won the first meeting with the Tigers on August 17th 6-5.
