Worship 101

Recently our President tweeted that in America we worship God not the government.

I wish I could fully agree but I don’t because well, not everyone does.

But you can certainly tell those who do.

They are the ones who know Jesus and how he feels about the broken, poor, and oppressed.

They remember what he said about the hungry, sick, and imprisoned and how he called his disciples to make a difference in their dire circumstances.

They realize how despised the lepers, tax collectors, and adulterers in the first century were and how Jesus surrounded himself with them anyway.

They recognize those hated today and take every opportunity to befriend and love them.

They understand where the women, Samaritans, and children fell on the social ladder and how the Messiah gave them worth so they search out the least of these so they can tell them that they are loved and they matter in this century, too.

They took the words of Jesus seriously when he said we should love our enemies so they made a list of who their enemies are, not to harass or destroy but in order that they might love, serve, and forgive.

They are well aware that they’ll be known for their love so they fearlessly choose to treat others the way Jesus did.

They encourage me to be better, to stand firm in a world where darkness fills the news and
chaos seems to reign.

No, Mr. President, not everyone here worships God but the ones who do speak light into the dark places.

They carry the name and example of Jesus into their communities.

They offer hope to a nation who worships greed, fame, and sex.

They show kindness, knowing it leads to repentance, to those who choose not to worship at all.

They are a voice of wisdom, compassion, and unity.

They are the peacemakers, the trailblazers, the voices in the wilderness crying out for the coming Lord.

Those are the ones who choose God over government and they are few but thank the Lord, they are fierce.
