UPDATED: RV fire likely began with vehicle’s refrigerator

Volunteer crews roll out the hoses upon arrival as fire engulfs the inside of a motor home this afternoon at a campground in Pirate’s Cove. Witnesses reported smoke coming from the vehicle just before 1 p.m.
Firefighters work to contain a fire that broke out this afternoon inside an RV in Pirate’s Cove.

South Marshall Fire Department and Fairdealing-Olive Fire Department volunteer firefighters responded to a motor home fire dispatched just before 1 p.m. Monday at Pirate’s Cove Campground after witnesses at a nearby camp location noticed smoke coming from the top of the RV.

Crews were able to contain the blaze without damage to neighboring campers, however South Marshall Fire Chief Ricky Sirls said the RV was completely gutted inside.

Sirls said firefighters believed the fire began with an electrical component of the vehicle’s refrigerator. Crews did not find suspicious circumstances, he said, nor was the state fire marshal notified.

RV owners were not inside at the time of the incident; no injuries were reported.
