Joy to the World by JT Parish

jt parrishI will never forget how I felt and the thoughts that came to mind as I stood in the Shepherds Field in Bethlehem many years ago. What must it have been like to the Shepherds when the angel of the lord appeared announcing the birth of Jesus? “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord!” In my mind I could see the Shepherds as they stood in astonishment as the heavenly host praised God, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, Peace, good will toward men!”

A few days later I stood in the Garden Tomb staring at the place where His body was laid. Scripture came to mind, “Why seek ye the living among the dead. He is not here, for He is risen. Come see the place where the Lord lay!” Jesus was crucified because He claimed to be the Son of God. Jesus was raised because He is the Son of God!

The Resurrection of Jesus is essential for our salvation. A dead Savior could not save us. Jesus ever lives to make intercession for us that He might save us to the uttermost. The incarnation is essential to the resurrection. Had He not been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin – God in the flesh, He would not have qualified to die for us, be resurrected, and become our High Priest who intercedes for us.

I personally enjoy the celebration, families getting together, the bright lights, the good food, the plays and programs, the gifts, and the goodwill – but we must look beyond these and realize the real meaning of Christmas! Yes, the incarnation was essential to the resurrection which is essential to our salvation! And that is of eternal importance to all of us.
