Let’s Move! Active Schools was founded in 2013 as part of the First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to help address the epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States. To help make progress against this goal, Let’s Move! Active Schools works to ensure that students participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day by equipping K-12 schools with the resources and tools to increase physical education and physical activity opportunities for students and to cultivate an Active School environment.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a catalyst for children’s health. They work with schools, professionals and families to transform the conditions and systems that lead to healthier kids.

Their goal is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and to empower kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits. They are founded by the American Heart Association and Clinton Foundation. They collaborate with and empower people and leaders to transform the environments that can make a difference in a child’s health: homes, schools, doctor’s offices and communities.

Alliance for Healthier Generation believe that…

If we can empower the people who influence these environments by giving them easy access to the best resources and science-based best practices, we can create a movement that transforms the places kids spend their time into healthy environments that encourage sustainable lifestyles.

South Marshall Elementary School is the first and only school in the district to receive the Bronze Medal from the Alliance for Healthier Generation for the 2015-2016 school year. We are also proud to announce we met the criteria for the 2016-2017 school year, too!

In order to receive the Alliance for a Healthier Generation award, we as a school had to meet certain criteria in areas such as: nutrition, physical education, school health, safety policies, and family and community involvement.

The Let’s Move! Action School 2015-2016, 2016-2017 award was presented due to our physical education and activity program.
