Local bank’s ATM’s affected by ‘skimmers’

The Paducah Police Department is warning the public to be alert to the possibility of “skimmers” at area ATMs. A Paducah man called police today and reported that someone had used his Regions Bank debit card number for a $258.44 purchase at a local business. He said the number also was used for a $362.36 purchase at a second business, but the transaction was declined. The man said he still has the card in his possession. Police suspect someone may have obtained the man’s debit card number through the use of a “skimmer,” and warn ATM users to be very cautious when visiting ATMs. If the face of the ATM looks suspicious, or is different that when you last used it, contact your bank before inserting your debit or credit card. Jiggle the card reader; if it moves around when you try to jiggle it with your hand, something probably isn’t right. Check the keypad to make sure an overlay hasn’t been placed on it to record your PIN. Check your bank statement regularly to reconcile all uses of your debit card. If you suspect something is wrong, report it to your bank. Anyone with information about the current case is asked to call the Paducah Police Department at 270/444-8550 or Crime Stoppers at 443-TELL. Tipsters also may access the online tip form through the City of Paducah website at http://paducahky.gov/west-ky-crime-stoppers. Information leading to an arrest or indictment may result in a reward of up to $1,000.
