Narrow?

johntparishThe bright young college student was sincere when she asked a well known theologian about John 14:6. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the Father but through me.” She said, “That seems narrow, just one way.” The theologian pointed out that Jesus came to earth as God’s only Son to “taste death for every man.” Jesus is the greatest expression of love mankind has ever known.

He paid the penalty for our sins and offered us eternal life as a gift of His grace and mercy. Nothing narrow about that! “But what about the Muslims, the Hindus, the Jews?” Jesus loves them and shed His blood on the Cross for them. The scriptures say, “Whosoever will let him take the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17) “Whosoever will” doesn’t sound exclusive or narrow. The ground around the Cross is level. The scriptures tell us “God shows no respect of persons.”

Did you ever consider how narrow the telephone company is. To call someone in particular you have to dial the area code and seven more numbers in exact sequence. Isn’t that narrow? Isn’t one number just as good as another? You can dial any number you want to, and you will probably talk to somebody, but if you have someone in particular you will have to dial the right numbers in the right sequence. When was the last time you heard someone complain that the phone company was narrow minded?

Yet, when it comes to spiritual things and something so important as how to go to Heaven when this life is over, we go void of common sense. Yes, Jesus is the way, the only way. He is God’s only begotten Son. He is the only one who died on the cross, rose from the dead, and is interceding at the right hand of the Father in heaven.

A person can be stubborn and say I am going to dial any number in any sequence I want to – well, help yourself, but you are going to do a lot of talking with strangers. Someone may say, “I’m going to go my own way. I believe one way is as good as another.” You are going to go somewhere but it won’t be Heaven. God has given us the way. His name is Jesus! He said, “Come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
