Marshall County man shot and killed during early morning Reidland burglary, accomplice taken into custody by police

REIDLAND – A Benton man has been killed and another is in custody following an early morning incident at the AAA Storage Business in Reidland.

According to police reports, McCracken Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Mini-Storage business located at 270 Eagles Nest Drive near the Reidland area of McCracken County concerning a shooting just after 7 a.m.

Upon deputies arrival, they found 30 year old Garlon Casey Cox of Benton, in the driver’s side seat of a Ford Ranger pickup, with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

The pickup truck had crashed into one of the storage units. Cox was immediately transported to Lourdes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:53AM.

The caller, Jeffrey Conrad, 49, of Benton, reported that he had arrived at the storage unit complex this morning and observed two individuals with the Ford Ranger pickup.

The pickup truck’s bed was full of items and merchandise that the caller recognized as being stolen from one of the storage units that he had rented.

The caller reported that he confronted the two individuals with a loaded .45 caliber pistol, ordering them to not move. Thirty six year-old Brandon York also of Benton, who was with Cox, ran from the scene on foot, just as the pistol fired. That round apparently struck Cox.

Sheriff’s detectives arrived at the scene shortly afterward and learned that many of the items in the bed of the Ford Ranger had been stolen from the callers storage unit.

Burglary tools including lock picks were found in the vehicle, along with Methamphetamine, and various items of drug paraphernalia.

Sheriff’s deputies with the assistance of a K-9 from the Graves County Sheriff’s Department searched the area looking for the suspect that had fled on foot. At 9:57 a.m. Deputy Jim Wilson gave chase through a yard near the Old Benton and Tyree Road intersection, and was able to apprehend that suspect, who was identified as being Brandon York.

Brandon York of Benton Ky has convictions for Attempted Possession of a Forgery Device and Theft, out of Simpson County, Kentucky. He was also arrested February 15, 2015 by the Bowling Green Police Department for Receiving Stolen Property Under $10,000  and Possession of Burglary Tools. He was released on bond with his next court date being scheduled for June 22, 2015 in Warren County Kentucky.

Garlon Cox had convictions also for theft, giving false name to police, and has pending theft charges in Bowling Green. He also was arrested on February 15, 2015 in Bowling Green Kentucky for felony theft.

Brandon Lee York, 36, of Benton was arrested for burglary 3rd degree, possession of burglary tools, possession of Methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was lodged at the McCracken County Regional Jail.

The investigation is continuing into the shooting death of Cox. Several meetings were had throughout the day with the McCracken County Commonwealths Attorney’s Office concerning this investigation. The McCracken County Coroner’s Office is also assisting in this investigation.
