Sammy Ray Washam, 75 of Gilbertsville, KY, passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at his home.

He was a graduate of South Marshall High School class of 1964. He then went into the US Army 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He retired from the Marshall County Detention Center and was a member of the Gospel Mission Worship Center in Reidland.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Marcia (Scheer) Washam, two sons, Michael Washam, wife Tammy of Paducah, KY and Kevin Washam, wife Kelly of Louisville, KY; 5 grandchildren, Brittney Washam, Madison Washam, Logan Washam, Ian Washam and Avery Washam; and two brothers, Eddie Washam and Freddie Washam both of Hardin, KY.

Sammy was preceded in death by his parents, the late Hulen and Elnora “Dale” (Young) Washam and one sister, Sandra Ladd.

Services will be held Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Collier Funeral Home, Benton, KY. Rev. Joe Daryl Thorn will officiate. Military honors will take place immediately following the service at the Collier Funeral Home, Benton, KY.

Friends may visit with the family after 1:30 p.m. until the service hour at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at the Collier Funeral Home, 211 West 5th St. Benton, KY 42025.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to a children’s charity of your choice.
