Coming off of Saturday’s 56-50 win over Bardstown, the Lady Marshals jumped in several of the state’s polls including a big move up to #2 in this week’s Dave Cantrall’s ratings behind #1 Anderson County and #4 in the AP poll.
Three games on the schedule this week started with a 56-16 win on Monday at home against Mayfield, holding the Lady Cardinals to their lowest point total in their 13 games played this season.
Marshall County jumped out to a big lead early, scoring 19 straight before Mayfield got on the board with a field goal by seventh grader Nya Burns. That would be the Lady Cardinals only points in the the quarter, the Lady Marshals leading 21-2 heading into the second.
The great defensive effort continued and they held the Lady Cardinals to just two points again in the second quarter. Sophie Galloway scored four of the Lady Marshals six second quarter points as several shots and lay ups didn’t fall their way but the lead was 23 going into the half.
Led by Jada Driver and Presley Jezik, each with five third quarter points, the Lady Marshals scored 18 while holding Mayfield to five points to take a 45-9 lead into the final quarter.
Mayfield’s largest point total came in the fourth, getting five of their seven points from seventh grader Lay Mayes, younger sister of former Murray High and current Murray State player Lex Mayes. Driver’s two 3-pointers led the Lady Marshals scoring on their way to the 40 point win.
Now 12-1, they will play at McCracken County (6-3) on Friday. The Lady Mustangs beat Murray 56-52 on Monday after a break from play, missing their last five games due to COVID cancellations. On Saturday, they will head to Owensboro to play Apollo (5-3), another team that has suffered with COVID cancellations throughout the season.
