DRAFFENVILLE – Sophomore Cole Jewell scored the Marshals first goal at 32:05 in the first half against Paducah Tilghman Monday in their season opener for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Dawson Jolley, a junior, scored goal number two at 35:03 before half the stadium lights went out to delay the game 20 minutes, going on to score the Marshals third goal just over three minutes after play was resumed.

Daniel Gardner had the assist in all three Marshall goals.

The common denominator in the Marshals goals was freshman defender Daniel Gardner with the assist in all three.

The physical game yielded three yellow cards, one on the Marshals and two on Tilghman and the early season warm night saw both teams suffer with cramping.

“I was so proud of them”, Head Coach Andrew Pagel said. “Tilghman’s a good team with eight starting seniors and with physical size. We were gritty and we made plays when we had to.”

Marshall County led in shots 11-6 and shots on goal 5-3.

Marshall keeper Keagen Watkins pulled in six saves and Coach Pagel said of Watkins, “he had a magnificent off-season and has grown leaps and bounds. Keagen jumped into the goal his freshman year and has only been playing soccer since 8th grade.”

The Marshals will host Murray on Thursday, who won their season opener Monday 5-2 over Todd County Central.

“Thursday night is extremely important to get that opening district win”, Pagel said.

The JV Marshals beat Tilghman 2-1.
