Freddie Green, 71

Freddie Green, Hickory, died suddenly at his home this past weekend. His 72nd birthday was Saturday, August 31.

A 1965 graduate of Mayfield High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving a tour in Viet Nam.

Freddie was a baseball stand-out at MHS. He lettered in baseball and spent many years behind home plate refereeing softball, high school, and community college baseball games after he left Murray State. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved going to the home games and to spring training in Florida with his buddies. He was a loyal friend to those who knew him.

Freddie was also an outstanding young tennis player. He grew up learning to play on his family’s grass court beside their home and won dozens of trophies as a junior player and through his late twenties. Freddie won the Mayfield City Championship, the Paducah Sun-Democrat Junior Championships, and other tournaments numerous times. He will also be remembered as an excellent bowler back in the day.

He is survived by three brothers and one sister, Larry Green (Carolyn) and Kerry Green (Marie) of Mayfield; Jack Green (Sue) of Florida; and Mary Frances Cummings of Nashville, TN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd K. Green, Jr., and his mother, Mary Allis Green.

A memorial graveside service will be held on 10:30AM Thursday September 5, 2019 at the Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hickory. No visitation is scheduled.
