Marshall’s boys win Class 3A Region I track title

Marshall County boys celebrate their Class 3A Region I Championship at McCracken County High School.

Marshall County’s boys have reclaimed the Class 3A Region I title, their third in the past four years. Region I champions in 2015 and 2016, the Marshals just missed out in 2017, taking second behind Daviess County by 10 1/2 points.

Behind the Marshals with a point total of 156, Owensboro and Daviess County tied for second with 82 points. McCracken County won the girl’s title with 101.6 points, second went to Owenboro with 99 and Hopkinsville third with 76.

Combined, the girls and boys won five individual region title and two relay titles and will automatically advance to the KHSAA State Track and Field Championships in 11 individual events and three relays. The top two competitors in each event at the region meet automatically qualify for the state meet. The next ten best times/heights/marks from the state-at-large also qualify for the state meet.

Tori McCracken is the Region I Champion in the high jump, clearing 5-00.

Automatic state qualifiers for the girls, Tori McCracken took first place in the high jump (5-00) and Audrey Grizzard placed second in the  in the pole vault (9-06). McCracken broke the school record in the high jump earlier this season.

The girl’s 4 x 800 meter relay team also earned a spot at state, placing second with a time of 10:19.67. Team members are Tori Ford, Carmen Gunn, Bailey Sandlin and Gabbi Lovett.

Earning Region I titles for the boy’s – Jackson Brown took first in the 110 meter hurdles (15.52), Caleb Pahl first in the pole vault (12-00), Aaron Reed first in the triple jump (41-11.50) and Zach Fiser first in discus (143-09). Two relays placed first including the 4 x 100 and 4 x 800. The 4 x 100 team is Wade Derington, Tanner Clough, Jacob Miller and Isaiah Kirby. Making up the 4 x 800 relay team is Mason Cosner, Bryce Flatt, Christian Cosner and Cade Flatt.

Second place finishes and state qualifiers were Cade Flatt in the 800 meters (1:57.97), Justin Wilson in the 110 meter hurdles (16.27), Jackson Brown in the 300 meter hurdles (39.97), Bryce Ladd in the pole vault (12-00) and Austin Clark in shot (46-01.50).

The boy’s third place 4 x 200 meter relay broke the 1983 Marshall County school record with a time of 1:32.04 and Jackson Brown’s time of 39.97 in the 300 high hurdles also set a new school record.

Many more from the team are expected to qualify for state on the next 10 best times and results in the state.
