Marshals finish regular season with 69-42 Homecoming win over Cobden

Marshall County and Cobden, IL tipped off Friday in The Grind Session’s first session of the Kentucky Lake Showcase and the game was also Homecoming for Marshall County High School. The final regular season game for the Marshals, getting the win over the Appleknockers 69-42.

Cobden came into the game with a 15-11 record, playing in Class 1A in Illinois and in the nine-team South Egyptian Conference. The win brings the Marshals regular season record to 17-11 and with the #1 seed in the 4th District Tournament, will play the winner of the Murray and Calloway County game in the championship game Feb. 22 at Murray High.

Cobden’s Noah Franklin put the Appleknockers on the board first with a 3-pointer, equaled by Tyler Stokes with his 3-pointer that he followed up with a basket to put the Marshals up 5-3. Cobden tied the game at 9-9 before a 7-0 Marshall County run stretched the lead out to seven, leading 18-13 at the end of the quarter.

Out-scoring Cobden 20-9 in the second quarter, the Marshals led 38-22 at halftime. They were led in the first half by Bryce Flatt with nine points and Tyler Stokes with eight. Franklin led Cobden with 10 first half points.

Tyler Smith dropped in a 3-pointer to open the second half for the Marshals, the start of 17 points in the third quarter led by Matt French with seven of his team leading 13 points in the game and six from Aaron Reed to put the Marshals up 55-36 going into the final quarter.

Tyler Powell opened the fourth quarter with a three, his second in the game out of six 3-pointers from the Marshals. They added 14 points in the quarter for the 69-42 win. Behind 13 points by French, also in double-figures Reed with 12, Flatt 11 and 10 each from Powell and Stokes. Reed’s 12 points and 12 rebounds earned Player of the Game honors.
