
A Marshall County girl has been chosen as one of two delegates in Kentucky to represent the state in the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP).
According to Marshall County High School, Claire Harmon, a junior at MCHS, was selected to participate in the program, which will be held March 3-10 in Washington, D.C. Harmon, who was selected as a 2016 Gear Up Kentucky Summer Academy partipant, recognized as an AP Scholar with Honor and member of the MCHS speech team, will receive a $10,000 college scholarship in addition to her participation in USSYP.

According to the USSYP, delegates will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials of the departments of State and Defense and leaders of other federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and the president of the United States. Each session includes an in-depth question and answer period.
According to the program, USSYP alumni have become leaders in government, law, business, education, journalism, the military, medicine, health care and many other fields. Alumni serve as elected and appointed officials at all levels of government including two current U.S. senators, a current governor, former senior political advisers to the president of the United States, former ambassadors and federal judges, congressional staffers, outstanding teachers, entrepreneurs, respected journalists, distinguished physicians, college professors, senior partners of law firms and presidents of major corporations.
The USSYP was founded in 1962 through Senate Resolution and each year two of the highest-achieving students from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education system overseas are selected through a competitive merit-based selection process held at the state departments of education nationwide.
