A missing Mayfield woman and her 9-month-old grandchild were rescued from overturned vehicle this weekend on the Graves/Marshall County line.
According to West Marshall Fire Department, the department responded to a report about 3:52 a.m. Monday of a vehicle in a ravine off of Ky. Highway 402 at the county line. Upon arrival, responders discovered an overturned SUV in a low visibility area with two occupants inside. Responders freed the two, who were later identified as 35-year-old Kayla L. Belcher and her 9-month-old grandson John Luke Sheridan.
According to Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Belcher was driving her 2004 GMC Envoy on Hwy. 402 when the vehicle left the left side of the road, striking an embankment before it overturned in a deep ravine. Police were given updated latitude and longitude estimates of Belcher’s last known location, which led to a sweep of the area.
Belcher and Sheridan were believed to be trapped in the vehicle for several hours before their discovery. Belcher was flown to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind., for treatment of injuries; Sheridan was treated and released from the Marshall County Hospital ER.
The two were reported missing Sunday, after they left Mayfield to visit a relative near Kirksey. They never arrived and had not been seen or heard from since about 3:30 p.m. yesterday, according to the Graves County Sheriff’s Department.
The investigation remains ongoing.
West Marshall was assisted on scene by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Benton Police Department and Marshall County EMS.
