Each year, the Marshall County Conservation District hosts its annual Safety Day at Mike Miller Park where every 5th grade student in the county is invited to participate. This year the safety demonstrations included regulars from the Palma-Briensburg Fire Department, the Marshall County Health Department to demonstrate seatbelt safety, USDA employees showing the potential hazards of farm equipment, US Forest Service’s Kyle Varel and Doug Phelps explaining how to safely ride and drive a variety of ATV’s, Detective Matt Hilbrecht from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office discussing internet safety and cyber bullying, Army Corps of Engineers’ David Landis demonstrating hazards of cold water exposure, and Marshall County Humane Society representatives talking about how to be safe around unfamiliar animals.
Trained volunteers from the Calvert City Industrial area participate under the guidance of the STEP (Safety Training and Environmental Protection) Ky personnel to teach 5th graders the importance of knowing how to “Shelter In Place”. This vital information which includes, staying indoors, listening to the radio for emergency announcements, closing all doors and windows, etc., could save lives in the event of a chemical spill/release.
Our new presenters this year were with the Marshall County High School Mountain Bike Team. Coaches Steve Beckett and Shane Darnall were present as well as ride leader John Tillson and team members Mackenzie Tack, Colton Adrian, Isaac Bayer and Travis Tack. Ride leaders and coaches explained the differences between road bikes and mountain bikes and focused on safety issues such as wearing a helmet and following traffic rules. Not only was this a great treat for the students present, but it was also a benefit to the future of the already successful mountain bike team as the students present will be eligible to join the team in the spring of 2017.
As always, this event was a great success due to the participation of caring people who do their best to make a difference in the lives of the youth of Marshall County. Thank you to all who participated!
