Calvert City Gun Club Claims 19th Victory at Kentucky State Skeet Championship

2025-5-man

(KEVIL, Ky.) — The Calvert City Gun Club added another chapter to their storied history at the Kentucky State Skeet Shoot this August, capturing their 19th five-man team championship with a record-tying score of 497 out of 500 targets.

The championship team consisted of Dr. Kenneth Ford, Barry Stevenson, Jody Stevenson, Gavin Stevenson, and Bart Redmon. Their nearly flawless performance matched the highest score in the event’s long history, securing them the traveling trophy for another year.

The five-man team competition has been a cornerstone of the Kentucky State Skeet Shoot since the inaugural event in 1935, with only a brief interruption during World War II when national skeet competitions were suspended from 1943 to 1946. The winning club houses the prestigious traveling trophy for one year before defending their title.

Family Rivalry Dominates Two-Man Events

While the team event showcased Calvert City’s depth, the two-man competitions became an intense family affair between two pairs from the same club. Dr. Kenneth Ford teamed with Barry Stevenson to face off against the father-son duo of Jody and Gavin Stevenson across multiple events.

Ford and Barry Stevenson claimed the high overall championship by the narrowest of margins, posting 785 out of 800 targets to edge out Jody and Gavin Stevenson by just one target.

The competition remained fierce across the gauge-specific events. Jody and Gavin Stevenson struck back in the doubles competition with a commanding 196 out of 200 score. They also captured the 12-gauge event, but only after a dramatic tie-breaker shootoff when both teams finished regulation with identical 199 out of 200 scores.

Ford and Barry Stevenson found their rhythm in the smaller gauges, taking the 20-gauge event with 197 out of 200. The 28-gauge competition required another tie-breaker shootoff, with both teams again posting 197 out of 200 before Ford and Stevenson prevailed. The veteran pair closed out their successful weekend by winning the .410 bore event outright with 193 out of 200.

The remarkable showing by Calvert City Gun Club members across both team and individual competitions underscores the club’s continued dominance in Kentucky competitive shooting sports.
