(OWENSBORO, Ky.) — Kentucky State Police officers are hitting the highways this week as part of a nationwide crackdown on commercial vehicles with faulty braking systems, an effort that could save lives by removing dangerous trucks and buses from the road.

The week-long enforcement blitz, running from August 24-30, will see KSP’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division conducting intensive brake inspections across the state. Any commercial vehicles found with brake-related violations will be immediately pulled from service until repairs are completed.

The initiative comes as brake defects continue to be the top reason commercial vehicles are sidelined during roadside inspections, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). Faulty brake systems dramatically reduce a vehicle’s stopping ability, creating potentially deadly situations for both commercial drivers and other motorists sharing Kentucky’s highways.

“Our officers and inspectors are dedicated to ensuring Kentucky’s highways remain safe for everyone,” said Lieutenant Brandon Goodman, spokesperson for West Commercial Vehicle Enforcement. “The trucking industry is vital to our state’s economy, and this initiative encourages companies to take proactive steps in maintaining safe fleets.”

This year’s inspections will place special emphasis on examining drums and rotors, components that directly impact brake performance when worn or damaged. The focused approach reflects ongoing safety concerns as commercial traffic continues to increase on interstate corridors.

Brake Safety Week operates under the umbrella of CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Program, a comprehensive safety initiative that has examined more than 3.4 million brakes since launching in 1998. The program spans across North America, with law enforcement agencies coordinating simultaneous enforcement efforts.

The timing coincides with Brake Safety Awareness Month, during which agencies nationwide work to educate drivers, mechanics, trucking companies and owner-operators about the critical importance of regular brake maintenance and inspection schedules.

For commercial vehicle operators, the message is clear: preventive maintenance is far less costly than the potential consequences of brake failure. Companies are encouraged to implement rigorous inspection protocols and address brake issues before vehicles hit the road.

The Kentucky State Police CVE Division’s participation in Brake Safety Week underscores the agency’s commitment to highway safety and its recognition that commercial vehicle safety directly impacts all Kentucky motorists.
