(PADUCAH, Ky.) – A unique partnership between the Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center and acclaimed chef Sara Bradley is transforming the fight against domestic violence through an innovative approach: a social enterprise spice company that provides employment and empowerment for survivors.
The collaboration represents the first social enterprise of its kind in the Purchase Region, combining Bradley’s culinary expertise with Merryman House’s mission to support domestic violence survivors. The venture creates meaningful job opportunities while generating sustainable revenue for the nonprofit’s essential services.
“We’re not just launching a product—we’re creating pathways to independence,” explained Mary Foley, Executive Director of Merryman House. “Every spice blend sold represents hope, employment, and continued support for survivors rebuilding their lives.”
Bradley, a James Beard Award nominee and owner of the celebrated Freight House restaurant, brings national recognition to the project. Known for her appearances on Bravo’s “Top Chef” and Food Network’s “Chopped” and “Tournament of Champions,” the chef’s western Kentucky roots made this partnership a natural fit.
The initiative received crucial support from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose contribution made the social enterprise possible. “The Church is honored to support Merryman House in helping our community’s most vulnerable members,” said Randy Balmforth, Paducah Kentucky Stake President. “This project embodies our commitment to helping individuals develop skills, build confidence, and improve their families’ futures.”
The initial spice blend collection draws inspiration from themes of resilience and renewal. Survivors participate in every aspect of production, from crafting the blends to packaging and distribution, gaining valuable work experience alongside steady income.
“Food connects us and has the power to heal,” Bradley noted. “Using my culinary background to create opportunities right here in my community feels like the most meaningful work I can do.”
The spice blends launch today through two channels: the dedicated website www.seasonandshadow.com and the agency’s site at www.merrymanhouse.org. Regional retailers will begin carrying the products in select locations. All proceeds directly fund Merryman House’s programs and services for domestic violence survivors.
This groundbreaking model demonstrates how creative partnerships can address social challenges while building sustainable solutions that benefit entire communities.
